Roundtable #2 - November 2nd, 2024

The next Howe Sound Roundtable is taking place at the Capilano University Squamish Campus (formerly Quest University) 10:00 to 3:00. Please go to the main building where you will be directed. Free parking is in dirt lots on University Boulevard before you get to the main building. See the map here.

Chris Corrigan is our facilitator. He will set the tone for a relaxed and interesting day. Here is the program so far for the day:

To prepare, please review the UNITY Plan and look for the goals and actions related to your sector. Consider how these goals could make your operations better in the areas of economic, environmental sustainability and social inclusiveness. Here is a link to the Goals and Actions.

Morning:

  • Getting to know each other again and introducing new members, revisiting our purpose and a recap first Roundtable meeting back in May and actions taken.

  • Special guest Bill Henwood will join. We worked with Bill to create the Plan, and he will share his experience in measuring and communicating these types of plans. We are always looking for your thoughts on how best to communicate.

  • Ruth will provide some updates from around the region and welcome others to share new information that influences or reflects on the plan.

  • We will focus our dialogue on Sustainable Development. Goal 1: Aspire for AHSUBR and its communities to be a model for sustainable development by demonstrating the integration of the core elements of sustainable development: economic growth, social inclusiveness, and environmental protection.

1.1 Provide clarity about what being “a model for sustainable development” actually means in the context of the existing social, economic and environmental fabric of the AHSUBR and its communities.

This will be followed by small group imagining and discussion on If governments and others adopt the goals of The Unity Plan, what changes might we expect to see in these three areas over time?”

  • We will enjoy a delicious lunch by Whistler Cooks. Brian Storey, Associate Vice-President of Capilano University, will join us to tell us more about the Squamish Campus, stay for lunch and then take us on a tour.

Afternoon:

  • We will reflect on the group discussion from the morning and, in the afternoon, focus on how we measure sustainability and what this looks like for different sectors.

  • We are looking for a list of actions and ways we all can support these actions.

  • We will close the session at 3:00.
