Our Summer Ambassador - Meet Sophie
Keep your eyes open between June and August for the smiling face of Capilano University student Sophie Cheshire who will be out and about in the region representing the Howe Sound Biosphere Region Initiative Society at outdoor recreation events and with operators.
Sophie is a summer Co-op student with CapU’s Tourism/Outdoor Recreation Program. She began a research project on Sustainable Tourism and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the spring. Her research will continue through next year’s fall term.
With financial support from the Rotary Club of West Vancouver Sunrise, we are able to enhance Sophie’s work experience with tools, mentorship and immersion into the network of organizations in the Howe Sound region. She is learning firsthand about the value of the UNESCO Biosphere Regions.
Sophie, having settled on the North Shore four years ago from Australia, calls Canada home. After a 15 year career in the retail industry, she decided to pursue her love for the environment while utilizing her strongest skill sets. Some of her key values are fostering relationships and collaborating with local communities, sustainable development, environmental protection, supporting individuals to reach their goals, and using nature as a healer for mental health trauma and stress.
Read more here about her research project. Sophie will be hosting workshops for outdoor recreation-focused tourism organizations about the UNESCO Biosphere Region. Follow Sophie as she posts on Instagram stories.
