Global Goal: Too much of the world’s wealth is held by a very small group of people. This often leads to financial and social discrimination. In order for nations to flourish, equality and prosperity must be available to everyone - regardless of gender, race, religious beliefs or economic status. When every individual is self sufficient, the entire world prospers. Source: Global Goals.org

Canada’s Response:

For Canada, the 2030 Agenda goal 10 is: Reduce inequality within and among countries. Source: Towards Canada’s 2030 Agenda. There are a number of actions, measures and many indicators that include: By 2030, progressively achieve and sustain income growth of the bottom 40 percent of the population at a rate higher than the national average.

The Canadian Human Rights Act is a broad-reaching piece of legislation that prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender, race, ethnicity and other grounds. Also, Canada's Employment Equity Act and the Federal Contractors Program require employers to take active measures to improve the employment opportunities for specific groups of people in our country.

Canadians have the right to experience workplace compensation practices that are free from gender-based discrimination. Pay equity aims to ensure that employers provide equal pay for doing work of equal value. Canadians have the right to be treated fairly in workplaces free from discrimination, and our country has laws and programs to protect this right.

How are actions within our biosphere region contributing toward these goals?

The Coalition of Inclusive Communities is a program of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO. The network brings together municipalities that want to improve their policies against racism, discrimination, exclusion and intolerance. Its strength lies in the shared experiences of its members. Together, the municipalities undertake initiatives to eliminate all forms of discrimination with a view to building open and inclusive societies. The Village of Lions Bay was the first and is the only community in the region to be a member.
