Spring 2023 Howe Sound Community Forum

Mayor Silas White and the Town of Gibsons will host the April 21st, 2023 Howe Sound Community Forum for elected officials, staff, and invited observers. The meeting takes place at the Gibsons Public Market on the waterfront in lovely Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast.

Attendees meeting together for the first time since the municipal elections will share updates from their communities on actions related to the Howe Sound community. With a particular focus on the Town of Gibsons, feature presentations include highlights from the Town of Gibsons’ leadership on Natural Asset projects such as the Source to Sea, Aquifer protection and creek monitoring and restoration.

Highlights and a report from the Ocean Watch Action Committee that has met quarterly since 2018 to advance government actions identified by the Ocean Wise Report - Ocean Watch Átl’ḵa7tsem/Txwnéwu7ts/Howe Sound Edition 2020.

Presentations on the status of the Glass Sponge Reef and Rockfish Conservation Area realignment will be provided by representatives from Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

Following up on the actions related to reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions and the fall 2019 Howe Sound Community Forum, where roundtable discussions on the theme of Leading in a Climate Emergency, there will be presentations on the Community Carbon Tracker by Tracey Saxby. Representatives of Sunshine Coast Climate Action Committee will present Paying for the Costs of Climate Change.

Discussions around the next steps on Governance related to the Átl'ka7tsem / Howe Sound UNESCO Biosphere Region and updates on the management plan from The Howe Sound Biosphere Region Initiative and more.

Attendees are invited to visit the Nicholas Sonntag Marine Education Centre .

Water taxis from Lions Bay and Bowen Island to Gibsons have been arranged for transport and are at full capacity. Only those that have pre-paid and received confirmation will be boarded.
