Marine Tourism course explores intepretation at Howe Sound marine parks
As part of our collaborative partnership with Capilano University, students of Roy Janzten’s Tour 104 Marine Tourism course travelled to Porteau Cove Provincial Marine Park on a bright and brisk day in March. This was a project inspired by the Test Your Concept initiative that we instigated with staff that aimed to connect faculty and students with real life problems and community members.
The students were met by Howe Sound Biosphere Region Initiative’s Ruth Simons who explained the opporutnities for improving signage at Howe Sound BC Provincial marine parks. Diane Mitchell of Red Rock Creative, a professional in the visitor interpretation signage field provided information and resources on what it takes to create signage that connects visitors to the area. The group also heard from Jennifer Kardynal of BC Parks.
Students presented their ideas following a second field trip to Bowen Island, where they were met by representatives of the Bowen Nature club for a beach interpretation experience.
